USA TODAY Which movies transformed your summer? As summer is wont to do, it was a season stuffed with remakes, reboots and tentpoles, with everything from a Marvel-ous kickoff in April to Hobbs & Shaw bringing some popular "Fast and Furious" flavor to the dog days of August. But while we were busy taking in Will Smith's rapping turn as Aladdin's Genie and singing along with Elton John in "Rocketman," some movies – even great movies – failed to make enough noise to attract audiences, while other blockbuster-hopefuls went bust. Here's a look at the stars who emerged triumphant – and others who saw their summer dreams dashed. Winner: BeyoncéQueen Bey was just warming up in April when she dropped her "Homecoming" concert documentary on Netflix and a surprise accompanying live album. In July the pop superstar voiced Nala in "The Lion King," and after walking the red carpet with Blue Ivy released an entire other new album from the film titled "The Lion King: The Gift," which features a ballad primed for an Oscar nomination. Buoyed by Timon (Billy Eichner), Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) and Simba (Donald Glover), the revamped "Lion King" went on to score $1.5 billion at the box office. Loser: The X-Men's 'Dark' send-off"Dark Phoenix" came, bombed, and went. The worst-reviewed film in the X-Men franchise (it got a lowly 23% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) earned just $255 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. Not even "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner could save the film. USA TODAY's Brian Truitt wrote the latest installment "finishes off the X-Men movie saga in frustratingly middling fashion." Fall movie preview: 10 movies you absolutely, positively must see this fall (from 'It 2' to 'Joker') Winner: Keanu ReevesReeves made magic happen everywhere this summer. From "John Wick 3" to Netflix's "Always Be My Maybe" to "Toy Story 4," the 54-year-old's viral success helped officially push "Matrix 4" to a green light. Much of this can be credited to how deep Reeves goes into his characters (even the animated ones). Before the actor signed on to play overly serious toy Duke Caboom in "Toy Story 4," "he would ask these really deep character questions, and you couldn't ignore them," director Josh Cooley told USA TODAY. "It really did force us to dig deeper into this character that we thought was more of a gag." Loser: So many critical favoritesDespite a clamor for more original films, audiences failed to buy tickets to see them at the cineplex. "Booksmart,""Late Night,""The Farewell" and "Long Shot" were among critics' favorites this summer, but none impressed at the box office. Stars have started getting more outspoken, particularly as ticket buyers choose to sit out diverse or women-directed fare. "You can't say 'I'm for it, too' and then only go see male, caped movies," Melissa McCarthy, whose original drama "The Kitchen" was among films that came and went quietly this summer, told USA TODAY. "It's a weird epidemic. I'm not against (those movies), but everybody's gotta put their money where their mouth is." Winner: Brad PittPitt is walking into fall with a spring in his step thanks to Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time In Hollywood," which made $123 million at the box office and got pundits debating Pitt's Oscar odds for playing an aging (yet still very ripped) Hollywood stuntman opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Jackson reprising his role from almost 20 years ago could save his "Shaft" reboot, which pulled in just $21 million and had a dismal 32% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Sequel-itis also hit "Angry Birds 2," "Secret Life of Pets 2," "Men In Black: International" and "Godzilla: King of Monsters." Winner: All the AvengersNothing dominated this summer like "Avengers: Endgame" (not even an almost three-hour run time), which had fans lining up to see the superhero-stuffed finale multiple times. Banking $2.796 billion worldwide, "Avengers: Endgame" became the highest-grossing movie ever, surpassing the all-time record of "Avatar," not accounting for inflation. And it's only the beginning. At Comic-Con, Marvel Studios revealed plans for Phase 4 of its Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will kick off 2020 with a standalone Black Widow film and "The Eternals," which includes Angelina Jolie in its cast. With a $1.1 billion haul worldwide, Spider-Man also did pretty great "Far from Home," even if his parents might be getting divorced now. Posted: 02 Sep 2019 11:34 AM PDT   Family goals!Beyoncé has got fans talking again after the Crazy in Love singer shared a series of pictures from her summer on Instagram on Monday. The mother-of-three posted a collage of snapshots without a caption, including a gorgeous photo of her husband Jay-Z, which looked to have been taken from a family holiday. In the candid picture, he looked happy and relaxed while lounging on a balcony. Other photos were of Beyoncé, including one of her wearing a bag around her stomach – something that prompted fans to continue to speculate her pregnancy. "We know you are pregnant," one wrote in the comments section, while another guessed: "She's got the fanny pack to hide the pregnancy." A third added: "She aint telling us she's pregnant until she feels like it."
Beyoncé gave a rare insight into her family life with new photo of Jay-Z from their summer The pregnancy rumours started in the summer, with fans convinced that Beyoncé has been dropping clues following the release of her new album, Spirit. In August, the star shared a series of photos of herself where she was wearing a purple and white checked dress. In the comments section, followers believed that the patterned ensemble was a deliberate choice. "Patterns like that camouflage very well. She looks very pregnant," one wrote, while another guessed: "Omg! Pregnant?" A third questioned: "Is that a baby bump?" One of Beyoncé's fans even went as far as writing all the clues that they believe she has dropped about a possible pregnancy. "We've been saying she is pregnant – she's been dropping clues the entire album. Purple is royalty, Simba (King) (son) – the lions curled up like a fetus. "She's covering her bump," one follower guessed. However, some of the star's fans weren't as convinced and believed that everyone was just speculating. "Why can't she just wear purple?" one wrote. In a rare televised interview on Good Morning America, she said: "Being a mother, my family is my biggest priority. Watch on Netflix Friday 3rd May: Tuca & BertieOdd couple-style animated comedy from BoJack Horseman animator Lisa Hanawalt, centred around a toucan (Tiffany Haddish) and a songbird (Ali Wong). Watch on Netflix Thursday 2nd May: I Think You Should Leave with Tim RobinsonA hilarious and sometimes unsettling sketch comedy show from former Saturday Night Live writer Tim Robinson. The series features top notch guest appearances from SNL alumni like Vanessa Bayer (in the social media behaviour-skewering piece above) and Will Forte, and is produced and directed by The Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer. If you like your comedy to waver into the absurd from time to time, this six-episode series will have something for you. Watch on Netflix Tuesday 23rd April: Bonding season 1A New York City student moonlighting as a dominatrix enlists her gay best friend from high school to be her assistant in this dark comedy from Barry star Rightor Doyle. With Disney's The Lion King dominating box office sales, some fans are wondering what changes the company made to the original film. Who voices Simba in Disney's The Lion King? Who are the characters in the re-imagined version of the animated movie? Learn more about them here. The main hyenas in 'The Lion King' are Shenzi, Kamari, and AziziWe just can't wait to meet these new characters. After some speculation regarding racial prejudice with the hyenas in The Lion King, Disney removed and revamped characters like Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. Don't worry, the hyenas are still around in this live-action adaptation, but their characterization is entirely different. Comedian Eric Andre voices Azizi, a hyena with a disregard for personal space. Actor Keegan-Michael Key voices Kamari, another main character out of the hyenas. Actress Florence Kasumba voices the leader of the hyenas, Shenzi. Her character even has beef with Nala, portrayed by singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.  Nala, voiced by Beyoncé is more of a lead character in the re-imagined 'The Lion King'Can you feel our love for Beyoncé tonight? The Grammy-award winning artist returns to the silver screen as Nala in The Lion King. Well, kind of. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter voices the character and even sings songs like "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Sprit" on the original motion picture soundtrack. Previously, Beyoncé acted in movies like The Pink Panther, Dreamgirls, and Austin Powers in Goldmember. The voice of young Nala is portrayed by Shahadi Wright Joseph, one of the youngest actresses to play young Nala in Disney's The Lion King on Broadway. You might know her as the track star from Jordan Peele's movie Us, but she also starred in Hairspray Live as Little Inez. K. C. Undercover's JD McCrary portrays young Simba. Donald Glover, also known by his stage name, Childish Gambino, voices the lead role of adult Simba. Aside from The Lion King, Glover starred in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Atlanta, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and The Martian. Other characters, like Timon, Pumbaa, and Zazu appear in the live-action adaptation of 'The Lion King'It's not all about lions in this movie — other animals from the original return in their fury, photo-real version of the film. A few iconic characters include duo Timon and Pumbaa, who reappear as Simba's closest friends in this rebooted adaptation. Timon, the self-absorbed meerkat, initially voiced by Nathan Lane, is portrayed by comedian Billy Eichner. Pumbaa, the lovable warthog, initially voiced by Ernie Sabella, is portrayed by Seth Rogen. A few new animal friends join Timon and Pumbaa on their adventures, including Bush Baby, voiced by Chance The Rapper according to Refinery 29. Talk show host, John Oliver, voices one of the member's of the king's court, a bird named Zazu. James Earl Jones reprises his role as Mufasa, Simba's father. It uses well-known stories and characters to tell the doomed love story between Orpheus and Eurydice. It has a Great Depression setting, but keeps the aura of Greek tragedy, with amazing music. It defies all the preconceived notions of what musicals usually are. It might be a little out there for traditional Broadway fans, but if we can get movies about giant robots, teenage wizards and half the world being snapped away, anything is possible. 9 AMERICAN IDIOT The Green Day concept album seemed like an odd choice to turn into a musical, but the catchy nature of the band's songs make it work. It's not the most upbeat story, but underachieving young people trying to figure out the next phase of life is pretty universal. A film version has been in development for a while, but so far we've seen no proof that it's actually happening. It's been 10 years since the show debuted, so it's about time! 8 SOMETHING ROTTEN This tale of how a small-time playwright does everything he can to get out of the shadow of hit writer William Shakespeare is hilariously over-the-top, with some very funny songs. Nick Bottom is fed up with the Bard, and his downward spiral is endlessly entertaining.
It may not be as popular as others on this list, but if done as an R-rated comedy with the right cast, it would definitely stand out from the crowd. A musical that makes fun of musicals is just what the genre needs. 7 AIDA Aida is a star-crossed love story in Ancient Egypt that uses the music of Elton John and Tim Rice to make it feel modern. It opened to great acclaim, winning several awards for its production and music. Once upon a time there were rumors of a movie version with Beyoncé, but nothing ever came of them. Aida is a Disney production, but we're pretty sure the studio is busy with superheroes, classic remakes and a galaxy far far away to get interested in a musical from the early 2000s. advertising 6 SUNSET BOULEVARD Considering how extensive Andrew Lloyd Webber's credits are, we're surprised that Sunset Boulevard hasn't made it to the big screen. It really deserves to get the full, old Hollywood silver screen treatment. The musical pretty much follows the story of Billy Wilder's 1950 classic, where silent film star Norma Desmond has gone increasingly insane as her fame has dissipated. As of writing this, a film starring Glenn Close is said to be in the works, but like many others on this list, we've heard that song before. 5 WAITRESS Waitress is based on the movie starring Keri Russell as Jenna, a waitress with a talent for making pies. After she gets pregnant, she begins an affair with her doctor while trying to figure out how to get away from her abusive husband. It may seem premature to remake a film so soon after it has come out, but that doesn't seem to be a major concern nowadays. We're not saying we didn't like the original; we just think Sara Bareilles' music adds a new depth to the story, which might attract a bigger audience. advertising 4 NEWSIES Disney is having a good time making updated versions of its classics, which means we're really shocked they haven't brought back Newsies yet. The 1992 movie starred Batman himself, Christian Bal,e as the leader of a newsboy strike in the early 1900s. It became such a cult favorite, the company made it into a Broadway musical.
Now, they could totally bring it back, using the story from the stage version, while capitalizing on the nostalgia fans still feel for the original. Perhaps, Bale could make a cameo appearance? 3 KINKY BOOTS Yes, Kinky Boots the musical is based on Kinky Boots the movie, which brings things full circle. The journey of Charlie trying to save his family's shoe factory by making boots for drag queens is inspiring, funny and heartwarming, with music by Cyndi Lauper. The original cast featured Pose star Billy Porter as Lola in a Tony-winning performance. What better way for him to return to the role than on the big screen? It's the sort of musical that's tailor-made to be a movie. advertising 2 WICKED Fans have been waiting for a Wicked musical since day one. The belovedWizard of Oz prequel follows witches Glinda and Elphaba as they discover the true differences between good and evil. Currently Universal owns the film's rights and has announced that it will be released in December 2021, but we've heard this before so we can't get our hopes up. We just really want to see Elphaba flying through the air singing "Defying Gravity" on the big screen. 1 HAMILTON This Tony winner became a cultural phenomenon that took over the entertainment world, so naturally we need a movie version. Now seems like the perfect time for a diverse cast of actors to bring the story of America's founding fathers to life with catchy, hip-hop musical numbers. Lin-Manuel Miranda has said that there won't be a movie version for a while, but it's definitely on the horizon. But fans are impatient! Many of the original cast has become famous, so now is the perfect time to reunite them all for the big screen. Come on, don't make us wait for it.

While some fans appreciated the remake's reverence, others felt that it betrayed a lack of originality on the studio's part. Jon Favreau was quick to credit the Broadway version of The Lion King, which includes several original songs and a somewhat altered storyline, as the source of inspiration for his version of Nala. Favreau was certainly smart to try to look to Broadway's Lion King for ideas, as that stage show is the highest-grossing Broadway show ever and beloved in its own right among Disney fans and Broadway fans alike. 9 Restrained Beauty Reviews for The Lion King were mixed, but critics were unanimous in their praise for the film's beautiful visuals. This is surprising given that Favreau actually went out of his way to make sure that every shot of the film was not stunning. The director felt that if the film's landscapes were always great to look at, then the film would quickly begin to feel artificial. He wanted the film to feel more like a documentary than an animated film, and to some degree, he succeeded as many critics likened the film to Disneynature documentaries. He made certain shots of the film using long-shot lenses as such lenses are used in documentaries. 8 Not Too Realistic Between Scar pushing his brother over the side of a cliff and various fight scenes between the lions and the hyenas, The Lion King is actually fairly violent for a children's film, especially since the violence isn't Tom and Jerry-style slapstick.
With that in mind, Favreau and company made sure that the violence in their remake wasn't too realistic so as not to upset younger audiences. 7 Beyoncé The Lion When Beyoncé was cast as Nala, many fans felt that it was the role she was born to play. In fact, Favreau's Nala was tailored to Beyoncé's strengths as a performer. Nala's movements were modeled on the way that Beyoncé moves while she's on stage. Favreau's decision to model Nala on Beyoncé seems to have worked, as even critics who decried the film tended to like Queen B's performance and felt that she held her own among the film's cast. That's quite a feat given that Beyoncé shared the screen with actors with much longer acting résumés than her own. advertising 6 A Reprise Besides James Earl Jones, who was lucky enough to reprise his role as Mufasa twenty-five years after the release of the original film, another actor from The Lion King's cast reprised their role: Florence Kasumba. Kasumba wasn't in the original film, but she once played Shenzi in a German production of the Broadway musical. 5 A Shakespearean Twist Plenty of Disney (and William Shakespeare) fans know that The Lion King is an adaptation of Hamlet. More accurately, it's an extremely, extremely loose adaptation of Hamlet. Even more accurately, it's a mostly original story which happens to borrow two scenes and its basic setup from Hamlet, and that's fine; a faithful adaptation of the play would probably be inappropriate - not to mention too cerebral - for most modern youngsters.
What's odd about the remake is that when Chiwetel Ejiofor played Scar (a character loosely modeled on King Claudius from Hamlet) he was actually channeling the title character from Macbeth. advertising 4 Beyoncé's Love Letter To Africa Beyoncé apparently took the film's African setting very seriously. When she was tasked with creating a soundtrack for the film, the singer designed the album as a "love letter to Africa" and reached out to some of her favorite African artists to collaborate with her, including Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, and Yemi Alade. The first single from the soundtrack, the gospel-inspired "Spirit," even begins with the Swahili phrase "Uishi kwa mda mrefu Mfalme," which translates to "Long live the king." 3 Elton's New Contribution As is mandatory in all Disney movies made from the early 1990s onward, The Lion King remake includes a pop single over its closing credits. That single was by none other than Sir Elton John. Not everyone noticed who sang it, largely because Sir Elton's voice has changed drastically over the years, but Disney managed to bring back the man who was key to the success of the original Lion King. Whether you loved or hated this new Lion King, it is the only film in the history of the world to feature original soundtrack contributions from both Elton John and Beyoncé, which undoubtedly makes it a film for the history books. advertising 2 Scar's Big Number Was Cut In Half One of the most important aspects of any Disney musical is its villain song. From "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from The Little Mermaid to "Hellfire" from The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Disney's more ghoulish numbers have proved to be some of their most memorable. Scar's villain song "Be Prepared" was no exception, but it was far different and far shorter in the remake than it was in the original film. This was probably because the new version of Scar lacks the campy humor that Jerry Irons famously brought to the role. Audiences seem to respond to darker villains in 2019 than they did in 1994 and the original "Be Prepared" is too gaudy to fit in with Scar's more serious personality. 1 This Film Wouldn't Have Happened Without The Jungle Book The Lion King inevitably garnered comparisons to the previous film that Jon Favreau made for Disney, The Jungle Book. What most fans probably don't know is that Favreau only made The Lion King because he felt that he came to understand digital technology through making The Jungle Book.
